Pullman Standard 5344 boxcar - underframe

Scratchbuilt underframe for the PS 5344 boxcar project

The underframe was challenge (they always are for me). I wanted to be accurate and thanks to a CD of great photos from Greg Elems, I was able to make good progress. The sides of the centersills are made from 0.250" Evergreen channel with one flange milled off. The naileable steel flooring is Evergreen's 0.040" thick corrugated siding with 0.060" spacing. The three stringers on each side are 0.080" I beams and do not interfere with the wheels. The bolsters and cross members were built-up from scratch based on Greg's photos and the nearest accurate model I could find which was the Athearn car in HO.
